Sinking air continues to prevail across north Texas, and this should help limit the number of storms forming in our area during the daylight hours. The sinking air, however, is not as impressive as it was yesterday afternoon/evening (which prevented storms from returning to the Metroplex), so it is at least possible to see isolated storms popping through the modest cap that is also in place across our area. Any storm that is able to overcome the sinking air could spit out hail. The best chance for these isolated storms would be north of I20.The main action this afternoon and evening, however, will be well to the west and northwest of us across Oklahoma and into far western north Texas (west of a line from Wichita Falls to San Angelo). In this area the sinking air is altogether absent and the cap is easily breakable, and thus powerful supercell thunderstorms with very large hail, high winds, and twisters will be likely this afternoon and evening.Eventually, this activity out west will organize into a solid line of storms and make its way to the DFW area during the early morning hours Sunday. Although they will not be as intense by the time they get here as they bang into our cap, they will be starting off so strong out west that they may still be capable of severe weather with torrential rain, hail, and strong winds as they blast through the DFW area in the morning. The heaviest storms will be in western sections.It is hoped that even though our cap won't be able to stop these morning storms, it is possible that it will be able to significantly limit - though perhaps not entirely eliminate - the tornado threat in the local area. As most of you know, storms that form in solid lines have trouble spawning significant tornadoes, but they can produce brief tornado spinups that are embedded in otherwise strong straightline winds. They tend to be nowhere near as strong as the twisters that come from discrete supercell storms like we saw across Iowa and Nebraska yesterday.So keep an eye to the sky for any isolated activity this afternoon/evening which would tend to move north if they are able to form, and then the main storm event arrives as a squall line that will sweep west to east across all of the Metroplex between 4 AM and 9 AM with some lingering but less intense storm activity developing behind the line. And then yet another flareup of storms across the eastern portions of north Texas can be expected Sunday afternoon.Computer Update: Sadly, I still do not have a new computer.
