The latest U.S. Drought Monitor released Thursday, August 4, 2022, continues to show worsening drought across our area with 100% of Navarro County now in Exceptional Drought (D4).
All North Central and Central Texas Counties are under Burn Bans. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) is at a new high for this season, and one not seen here for many years.
As of today the average KBDI value is at 756 with some areas as high as 770. Keep in mind this scale goes from 0 being saturated or no moisture depletion in fuels to 800 at max dryness conditions. This index is utilized to help determine forest fire potential.
We do not see much relief from the conditions through the end of August with hot and dry conditions staying persistent through this timeframe. We urge residents throughout Navarro County to stay vigilant and use extreme caution with any outdoor activities that could result in a fire, and remember burning of any kind is strictly prohibited under the current BURN BAN order.
A special THANK YOU to all of our Fire Departments, mostly all VOLUNTEER, throughout Navarro County for their efforts to respond and quickly contain the fires we have experienced this summer. Many areas across the region have not been as fortunate as some of the fire conditions simply have made containment efforts too difficult.
If you observe a fire, please call 9-1-1 immediately. Stay safe Navarro County! #drought #firewise #kbdi #wildfires #thankyoutoourvolunteers #burnban #navarrocounty #txwx ...
